Pages reordered for folding, two to a sheet

The pages are rearranged into saddle-stitch order and placed two per landscape sheet, so a printed stack folded in half reads correctly.

Folding a stack of paper puts the pages in an order that has nothing to do with 1, 2, 3. The last page has to sit beside the first on the outside sheet, page two beside the second-to-last on its back, and so on inwards. Working that out by hand is error-prone for anything longer than a few sheets, and that arithmetic is the whole job this page does.

Blank pages are added to reach a multiple of four

Every folded sheet holds four pages, so a document that is not a multiple of four is padded at the end.

A six-page document becomes eight, with two blanks. This is not the tool being wasteful; it is a physical property of folded paper. The blanks land near the inside of the back cover, which is where most people would put them anyway. If the blanks bother you, adding two pages of your own content is more useful than removing them.

Printing it correctly

Print double-sided, flipping on the short edge, then fold the whole stack in half.

Short-edge flipping is the setting that catches people out; long-edge will give you alternate upside-down pages. Printer drivers word this differently and some get it wrong, so print a four-page test document first and fold it. Thirty seconds of testing saves reprinting eighty pages, and it is worth repeating on any printer you have not used for a booklet before.

What it does not adjust for

There is no binding gutter and no creep compensation, and every page is scaled to fit its half of the sheet.

Pages are simply centred, so if your content runs close to the inner edge it may disappear into the fold — leave that margin in the original document. Creep is the other thing: on a thick booklet the inner pages stick out slightly when folded, which real print shops compensate for and this does not. For a short booklet neither matters. The sheet size is taken from your first page, so mixed page sizes will show uneven margins.

FAQ

Is the output ready to print as a folded booklet?

It is laid out for it: sheet 1 front carries the last page and page 1, its back carries page 2 and the second-to-last page, and so on. Print double-sided and flip on the short edge. Printer duplex settings vary, so print a 4-page test before a long document.

What happens if my page count is not a multiple of 4?

Blank pages are added at the end so the count becomes a multiple of 4. Those blank pages end up as blank halves in the booklet, usually on the inside of the back cover.

What if my pages are different sizes?

The sheet size is based on the first page (two pages wide, one page tall). Every other page is scaled down or up to fit inside its half and centred, so mixed sizes will show different margins.

Does it add margins or a gutter for binding?

No. There is no gutter or creep adjustment; pages are simply centred in each half. Leave binding margin in your original document if you need it.
