What Facebook documents for Page covers

At least 400×150 pixels, and 851×315 as the fastest-loading file: an sRGB JPG under 100 KB.

Facebook’s Help article on Page profile picture and cover photo dimensions says a cover photo on a computer left-aligns with a full bleed and a 16:9 aspect ratio, and on mobile a 2.4:1 aspect ratio. For both it says the image must be at least 400 pixels wide and 150 pixels tall, and that it loads fastest as an sRGB JPG file 851 pixels wide, 315 pixels tall and less than 100 kilobytes. The display ratios and the file size differ

Facebook lists 16:9 on computers and 2.4:1 on mobile next to an 851×315 file, which is neither, so what is shown is cropped.

851×315 is about 2.7:1. Facebook states the display shapes and the fastest-loading file size separately and does not reconcile them, so treat the edges as expendable. Keep the subject and any text well inside the frame instead of tight to the top or bottom.

Make room for the profile picture

The profile picture sits over the left side of the cover, so keep faces and text away from it.

Facebook says the left-hand side is partially covered by the profile picture, and that on mobile the overlap is roughly 40 pixels. It also says a Page’s profile picture should be 320×320 for best quality and is cropped to a circle. Use the slider to move your subject to the right of the frame, or place text there. The preview shows the crop but not the profile picture, so leave generous space on the left.

Choosing what the crop keeps

A cover is a wide strip, so most photos lose a lot of height. You choose which band survives.

A 16:9 photo keeps about 66% of its height in an 851×315 frame, a 3:2 photo about 56%, and a 4:3 photo about 49%. Those are arithmetic from the shapes. A very small source is enlarged to fill the frame, which cannot add detail; the page tells you when that happens. The 100 KB figure Facebook gives is for fastest loading, not a limit; if you want to reach it, Compress Image to KB can aim at an exact size.

FAQ

Why 851×315 and not 820×312?

820×312 is a figure that circulates widely. Facebook’s own Help page for Page cover photos says a cover loads fastest as an sRGB JPG that is 851 pixels wide, 315 pixels tall and under 100 KB, so that is what this page now produces. It used to output 820×312.

Is this for a Page or a personal profile?

The numbers come from Facebook’s Help article on Page profile pictures and cover photos. Facebook has a separate article for personal profiles, which this page does not use.

Will my profile picture cover part of the cover?

Yes. Facebook says the left-hand side of a cover photo is partially covered by the profile picture and may be cropped and resized to fit different screens. On mobile it says the profile picture overlaps the cover by approximately 40 pixels.

Is this a cover designer?
