How to calculate a percentage of a number

Multiply the percentage by the number, then divide by 100. For example, 15% of 240 is 15 × 240 ÷ 100 = 36.

Use this when you know the rate and the whole amount. Enter 15 and 240 in the first calculator mode to check the result. The calculation is mathematical only; tax, fees or rounding rules may change a real-world total.

How to find what percent one number is of another

Divide the part by the total, then multiply by 100. If 36 is part of 240, 36 ÷ 240 × 100 = 15%.

The total must not be zero. This is useful for completion rates, marks and proportions, provided both values use the same unit.

How percentage change works

Percentage change is (new value − original value) ÷ original value × 100.

A move from 80 to 100 is a 25% increase because 20 ÷ 80 × 100 = 25. A percentage change is not the same as percentage points when the values are already percentages. Use the original value as the denominator, not the new value. When the original is zero, a percentage change is undefined, so this calculator asks for a non-zero original value.
