Compress PDF to 100KB

Fits a PDF under 100 KB. On our test pages that holds one scanned A4 page at a comfortable 96 dpi and two only at the 60 dpi floor, and the page says plainly when yours is out of reach. Runs in your browser.

Maximum file size

KB

We aim under 100,000 bytes. Some sites count a KB as 1,000 bytes and others as 1,024, so this passes either check.

Up to 40 pages. A PDF that is already small enough is returned untouched, and a lossless rewrite is tried before anything is redrawn.

How to Use

  1. 1Add one PDF by dropping it on the upload area or choosing it from your device.
  2. 2100 KB is already selected; change it with the buttons or type your own limit in KB.
  3. 3Click the compress button and wait. The progress bar shows which setting is being tried.
  4. 4Open the result, zoom to 100% and read every name and number before you submit it.

About this tool

What fits under 100 KB

One scanned A4 page fits comfortably. Two fit only at the 60 dpi floor. Three or more did not fit in our tests.

• 1 page, 468 KB to start: 93 KB at 96 dpi • 2 pages, 918 KB to start: 85.3 KB at 60 dpi • 3 pages, 1.37 MB to start: out of reach (smallest 109 KB at 60 dpi) • 5 pages, 2.27 MB to start: out of reach (smallest 180.6 KB at 60 dpi) • 8 pages, 3.62 MB to start: out of reach (smallest 287.9 KB at 60 dpi) • 12 pages, 5.42 MB to start: out of reach (smallest 431.1 KB at 60 dpi) These are measurements on test pages we built to resemble scanned A4 pages, not on your document. Real pages vary: a mostly blank page costs less than a photo.

One page is comfortable, two is a squeeze

A single page keeps 96 dpi at 93 KB. Add a second and both drop to 60 dpi, which came to 85.3 KB.

The budget is shared, so a second page does more than halve the first one’s allowance: the pair has to share 100 KB, and the only setting that fit was the floor. A third page tipped it over: three pages at the floor came to 109 KB. On the same test pages, one page cost about 36 KB at 60 dpi, 59 KB at 72 dpi, 92 KB at 96 dpi, 146 KB at 110 dpi, 194 KB at 130 dpi and 332 KB at 150 dpi, each at the JPEG quality the tool pairs with that resolution.

If it will not fit, send fewer pages

Dropping one page from a three-page scan turns an impossible 109 KB into an easy fit.

The cheapest fix is usually fewer pages, not a worse picture. Delete PDF Pages removes a page you do not need, Extract PDF Pages keeps only the ones a form asks for, and Split PDF cuts a long document into parts that each fit. If the form allows several uploads, split and compress each part. The method behind the choice of resolution is explained on Compress PDF to a Set Size.

Check it before you upload

At this size the pages are soft, so read the parts that matter.

On 9-point test text at 100% zoom, 96 dpi was sharp, 72 dpi slightly soft, and 60 dpi clearly blurred though the words were still legible. Digits and small print are less forgiving than words, so check the ones that matter, such as ID numbers. If the PDF is just a photograph, shrinking the photo with Compress Image to KB and rebuilding with JPG to PDF gives you control over the picture itself.

Features

  • Returns the file untouched if it is already under the limit
  • Aims under 100,000 bytes, so it passes whether a site counts 1,000 or 1,024 per KB
  • Keeps a single page at 96 dpi where the budget allows
  • Says plainly when a limit cannot be reached, and gives the smallest file it could make
  • Runs in your browser; the PDF is not uploaded

FAQ

Can I get two pages under 100 KB?

On our test pages, yes, but only at the 60 dpi floor: two scanned A4 pages came to 85.3 KB. The text is soft at that setting, so read it before sending.

What about three pages?

Three of our test pages came to 109 KB even at the floor, so 100 KB was out of reach. Deleting one page, or splitting the document into two files, brings it in.

Does the text stay selectable?

Only if the file was already under 100 KB, or a lossless rewrite was enough. Otherwise each page becomes a picture and the text can no longer be selected.

Is 100 KB exactly 100,000 bytes?

The tool aims under 100,000 bytes, the stricter reading, so the file passes a check that counts 1,024 bytes per KB as well.
