Compress PDF to 200KB

Fits a PDF under 200 KB. On our test pages that holds one scanned A4 page at 130 dpi, two at 96 and three at 72, and the page says plainly when yours is out of reach. Runs in your browser.

Maximum file size

KB

We aim under 200,000 bytes. Some sites count a KB as 1,000 bytes and others as 1,024, so this passes either check.

Up to 40 pages. A PDF that is already small enough is returned untouched, and a lossless rewrite is tried before anything is redrawn.

How to Use

  1. 1Add one PDF by dropping it on the upload area or choosing it from your device.
  2. 2200 KB is already selected; change it with the buttons or type your own limit in KB.
  3. 3Click the compress button and wait. The progress bar shows which setting is being tried.
  4. 4Read the result, then open the download and check names, dates and numbers.

About this tool

What fits under 200 KB

One page at 130 dpi, two at 96, three at 72 and five only at the 60 dpi floor. Eight or more did not fit in our tests.

• 1 page, 468 KB to start: 197.3 KB at 130 dpi • 2 pages, 918 KB to start: 184.4 KB at 96 dpi • 3 pages, 1.37 MB to start: 177.3 KB at 72 dpi • 5 pages, 2.27 MB to start: 180.6 KB at 60 dpi • 8 pages, 3.62 MB to start: out of reach (smallest 287.9 KB at 60 dpi) • 12 pages, 5.42 MB to start: out of reach (smallest 431.1 KB at 60 dpi) These are measurements on test pages we built to resemble scanned A4 pages, not on your document. Real pages vary: a mostly blank page costs less than a photo.

Budget per page: 200, 92, 59 and 36

The measured results line up with the budget each page gets: a lone page can have 130 dpi, five pages share down to 60.

One page took 197 KB at 130 dpi. Two pages shared 200 KB at 96 dpi, about 92 KB each. Three took 177 KB at 72 dpi, about 59 KB each. Five reached 181 KB only at 60 dpi, about 36 KB each. The tool is simply finding the best resolution whose total stays under the limit, which is why the quality steps down as the page count goes up.

When one page matters more than the rest

If a form needs only certain pages, send those and give each a bigger share of the 200 KB.

Extract PDF Pages keeps just the pages you name, and a single page can use all 200 KB at 130 dpi. For a long document that cannot fit at readable quality, Split PDF produces parts that each can. The reasoning behind the settings is on Compress PDF to a Set Size.

Eight pages and more

Eight of our test pages came to 288 KB at the floor, so 200 KB was out of reach.

Past about five ordinary scanned pages the floor itself is over 200 KB. At that point splitting the document is the answer, not a lower setting, because below 60 dpi the pages stop being something a person can read.

Features

  • Returns the file untouched if it is already under the limit
  • Aims under 200,000 bytes, so it passes whether a site counts 1,000 or 1,024 per KB
  • Shows which resolution it settled on
  • Says plainly when a limit cannot be reached, and gives the smallest file it could make
  • Runs in your browser; the PDF is not uploaded

FAQ

How many pages fit under 200 KB?

On our test pages: one at 130 dpi, two at 96, three at 72 and five at the 60 dpi floor. Eight or more did not fit.

Why does adding a page lower the quality of all of them?

Because 200 KB is shared across the document. One page gets all of it; five pages get about 40 KB each, which is the floor.

My PDF is text, not a scan. Will it shrink?

Often it is already small, in which case it is returned untouched. Redrawing a text PDF as pictures usually makes it larger, so the tool then hands back the smaller of your original and its redraw and tells you which.

Is my PDF uploaded?

No. It is read and redrawn in your browser.
