What Instagram says about photo size

Instagram shares photos at up to 1080 pixels wide and keeps their shape as long as it falls between 1.91:1 and 3:4.

On its help page about image resolution, Instagram says it uploads a photo at the best quality possible, up to a width of 1080 pixels. A photo between 320 and 1080 pixels wide stays at its original resolution when its shape is between 1.91:1 and 3:4, which it defines as a 1080-pixel width with a height between 566 and 1440 pixels. A shape outside that range is cropped to fit one that is supported. To be shared at the full 1080, upload a photo at least 1080 pixels wide inside that range. When a square is the right choice

A 1:1 square is inside Instagram’s accepted range, so a 1080×1080 file is shared at full resolution. It is a choice, not a requirement.

Pick a square when you want one consistent shape across a set of posts, or when the subject is centred and a square keeps all of it. If the sides of a landscape photo matter, leave it wide: up to 1.91:1 is accepted, and a square crop would remove them. A 1080×1350 portrait also falls inside the stated range. This page makes squares only. To fit a whole picture onto a square without cropping, Canvas Resize adds space around it instead.

Choose what survives the crop

The slider moves the crop along the one direction that overflows: left to right for a landscape photo, top to bottom for a portrait.

Fitting a photo into a square always discards something. A 4:3 landscape photo keeps 75% of its width, a 3:2 photo about 67%, and a 16:9 photo about 56%. Those are arithmetic, and the page shows the exact figure for your own picture under the slider. The preview is drawn with the same placement rule as the exported file, so the part you see is the part you get. If the picture is smaller than 1080 pixels it is enlarged, which cannot add detail, and the page tells you by how much.

Files and formats

Leave the file type on the original for a JPEG or PNG, or choose JPEG for a smaller file or PNG to keep sharp text.

A WebP or HEIC photo is written as JPEG unless you choose otherwise, so the result uploads anywhere. Choosing JPEG flattens any transparent area onto white. If the finished file is larger than you want, Image Compressor reduces it further, and Compress Image to KB aims at an exact size. Instagram’s own pages did not state a file-size limit for photos, so none is promised here.

FAQ

Does Instagram require a square photo?

No. Instagram’s help says a photo between 320 and 1080 pixels wide keeps its resolution as long as its shape is between 1.91:1 (wide) and 3:4 (tall). At 1080 pixels wide that is a height from 566 to 1440 pixels. A square sits inside that range, and so do landscape and portrait shapes.

What size gets the best quality?

Instagram says to upload a photo at least 1080 pixels wide with a shape between 1.91:1 and 3:4. A wider photo is scaled down to 1080 pixels, and one narrower than 320 pixels is enlarged to 320.

Should I crop a wide photo to a square at all?

Only if you want a square. A landscape photo up to 1.91:1 is accepted as it is, and cropping it to a square throws away part of the picture. This tool is for when you have decided on a square.

Does it add white bars around the picture?

No. It only crops. If you would rather keep the whole picture and add space around it, use Canvas Resize.

Is my picture uploaded?

No. The crop and resize happen in your browser and the file stays on your device.
